Pest species are assessed by their impact, invasiveness and potential distribution. Containment or control is determined by control costs, pest persistence and pest distribution. In the Northern and Yorke region, pest plants and animals are managed in the following ways:
- If ‘sparsely present’, pests are eradicated.
- If actively invading and impacting on natural resources, they are contained.
- If abundant, pests are controlled, by targeting priority areas with integrated control methods.
The law
NYNRM administers the Natural Resources Management Act 2004 in our region.
Under the legislation, pest plants and animals are declared, along with requirements for their limitation, control and prevention.
For specific pests, the Board decides on 'pest policies' which outline what is expected of landholders.
While our field officers can inspect properties and request action, working together is the best way to deal with unwanted intruders.
