Our Programs

The Northern and Yorke NRM Board drives and funds a wide range of natural resources management projects in Northern and Yorke. In every venture possible, local people are encouraged to combine their inside knowledge with expert technical advice for the maximum positive effect on our environment.

WATER

Sustainable water supplies and use are assessed by determining limits for surface and groundwater use, and by monitoring water-dependent ecosystem flows.

Water quality improvement is sought by biological and chemical monitoring of waterways by community groups such as Waterwatch. On ground work is a priority for protection, rehabilitation and revegetation of river zones, wetlands and waterways. Action plans for waterway erosion control are on the drawing board, while a regional water resource plan and a Willochra river management plan are for consideration.

Water

SOILS AND PRIMARY PRODUCTION

Groundwater driven salinity is being tackled by benchmarking in the Light and Wakefield catchments and preparation of a salinity management plan. On ground work is concentrated on revegetation, surface drainage, culvert realignment, bore networks and fencing. There are awareness and skills training sessions for community members.

Wind and water soil erosion management is gaining momentum with innovative technical support.

Soils

BIODIVERSITY

Natural ecosystems are a big priority. On ground work for remnant vegetation is underway through voluntary agreements and fencing, strategic revegetation, key Bush for Life sites, and farm revegetation through Trees for Life. There is also legal protection for remnant vegetation. Threatened species are managed, protected and recovered through translocation, breeding and seed banks. Community recovery teams have been established, and education and training sessions held.

Biodiversity

COAST AND MARINE

Coastal protection is promoted through access management and education such as vehicle and pedestrian fencing, and signage. Vegetation rehabilitation, erosion control and waste management also are part of the on ground works.

Marine biological health is monitored at selected reef sites. An inventory of key subtidal and intertidal habitats will further assist monitoring.

PEST PLANTS, PROBLEM ANIMALS AND DISEASES

Biodiversity conservation through the fight against pest animals and plants is beginning to make its mark.

Pest plants and animals which threaten the region’s environment and sustainable agriculture are managed strategically through biological, traditional and local area controls. Technical support and advice is provided to the community.

CULTURAL VALUES

Indigenous cultural values are respected within Northern and Yorke's natural resources management. Indigenous people are becoming involved through awareness raising, skills and training and on ground demonstrations.

COMMUNITY AND PROGRAM CAPACITY

Engaging and supporting stakeholders in natural resources management is a continuous process. It involves local networks with coordinators, education, training and public awareness programs.

Regional natural resources program management is a combination of developing a Monitoring and Evaluation strategy and administering and implementing our wider program for the benefit of Northern and Yorke.
