The Board is a statutory authority under the Minister for Environment and Heritage and its roles are defined in the Natural Resource Management Act 2004.
That means it is responsible for managing the region’s land, water, biodiversity and coastal and marine ecosystems, providing advice and education to landholders, and building community capacity.
In all of its endeavours, the Board is building on past achievements in natural resource management carried out by boards and organisations dedicated to catchment care, soil conservation, animal and plant control along with thousands of volunteers working on private and public land.
The Board provides leadership, sets long term visions for natural resource management, identifies priority areas for investment, involves and empowers communities in this endeavour.
It is monitoring the condition of our natural resources and the effectiveness of management strategies while encouraging integrated and coordinated participation for practical, positive outcomes.
